In the near future I must write a scene that makes me uncomfortable. I look forward to it like I look forward to crawling headfirst down a steep, rocky slope in the dark. At least I know where the bottom is.
My only reward is knowing it will make readers even more uncomfortable. If it doesn’t I’ll have to write it again. Great reason to get it right the first time.
Twain used to say “Murder your darlings” or some such. The problem with that approach: killing a character ends their suffering…or would, if this wasn’t paranormal.
