Teaching my son the importance of establishing the protocol for an experiment before jumping into the actual procedure. This includes things such as:

running your samples through in intermingled sets to average out any slight differences in temperature, et al, between runs
determining sample sizes to balance an easily detectable difference in results with cost of materials
testing tolerances of materials to ensure identical mixing modes

and most importantly

deciding what number we count to before we pull the pin and let the Mentos drop into the Diet Coke
how far away from the house we need to be to keep his mom from yelling at us

Science marches on!

and I expected him to add – establish the importance of communicating well with your team, and counting clearly to three so one doesn’t get sprayed in one’s eyes, or elsewhere for that matter.
